Centuries of Resistance

The military history of Kosovo is a testament to the strength and determination of the Albanian people to defend their land, identity, and freedom. Over the centuries, this land has been the scene of numerous battles, uprisings, and conflicts that have shaped the destiny of the Albanian nation.

From the time of Skanderbeg to the last war of 1999, Kosovars have shown an unwavering will to resist various invaders and preserve their cultural and national heritage.

Battle of Kosovo

The legendary battle between the united Balkan army led by Prince Lazar and the Ottoman army of Sultan Murad I. It ended with the deaths of both leaders and marked the beginning of Ottoman rule in the Balkans.

Revocation of Autonomy

Slobodan Milošević revokes Kosovo's autonomy, triggering the start of active resistance.

1998

Start of the War

Armed war begins between the KLA and Serbian forces. The first massacres of civilians are reported.

March 24, 1999

NATO Intervention

78-day bombing campaign by NATO against Serbian targets to stop ethnic cleansing.

Kumanovo Agreement

Withdrawal of Serbian forces and establishment of the international administration of UNMIK.

Declaration of Independence

The Assembly of Kosovo declares independence, creating the new state of the Republic of Kosovo.
